MEET ANTONY BOWMAN-POUNDER, TSS FOR SOUTHWEST: A Q&A

Q) Tell us about your previous careers? How did you come to join Valspar Trade?

I actually studied construction at college, with the original vision of becoming a bricklayer, so I’ve always had a solid background within the wider industry. From there, I worked at a kitchen design company for 14 years, advancing to partner, before moving into various sales roles within the kitchen and worktops sector. It was during this time that I was able to build a strong trade network within the South of England – a background that has stood me in good stead at Valspar Trade.

I’ve been here for almost three years now and truly hit the ground running! For me, it’s far more than just another sales role – it’s truly about helping small businesses to grow.

Q) Why is one-to-one support so important within the trade? How do you offer this?

The focus is on building trust and genuine, long-term relationships with decorators. A lot of the people I speak to are small, family-run companies – their business is everything to them. Their time for visiting new jobs, writing quotes and purchasing paint is outside of the typical 9-5. That’s why I work hard to ensure I’m always open and available when they need it.

 

It’s about far more than just selling paint. I’m there to help them grow their business, identifying needs and challenges and offering support or advice. This could be as simple as recommending products that can save time in the long-run – a great example being Valspar Trade Direct to Wood & Metal, with no primer required – or visiting potential new jobs with them. 

 

Q) What’s your favourite thing about your role as a TSS? 

I love seeing a customer win a big project and then seeing the finished outcome, knowing I’ve helped along the way. Supporting a small business and celebrating their wins, it’s extremely rewarding.

 

Q) Outside of the world of painting and decorating, what keeps you busy?

I love sports, football, rugby - both playing and watching. I also really enjoy fishing, whether that’s with a group of friends, our annual family trip at the end of the summer or getting valuable one-on-one time with our children, away from the chaos of everyday life. I find the tranquillity is a perfect way of resetting the mind, helping me to come back to work feeling refreshed.

 

Q) What’s the best decorating tip you’ve picked up along the way?

After loading a brush, lightly tap it on the pail edge to reduce drips.
