Tips & tricks for reduced preparation!
We all know that there’s more to painting than just picking up a brush and getting started. Carrying out proper prep is the secret to achieving a smooth, professional finish but that doesn’t mean it has to take forever. By mastering a few smart tricks, you can cut down on preparation time whilst still ensuring high-quality results. Read on, as we share the key tips and tricks to help you prep faster and paint sooner…
Preparation products, including primers, undercoats and knot blockers, each serve their own purpose to meet your decorating needs. While primers help to fully prepare substrates and establish a solid base for your coats to adhere to, undercoats are designed to provide a smooth neutral surface to paint over, helping to achieve your customer’s chosen colour in less time.
Occasionally, you may have to use a range of these products to prep walls for painting before even beginning to apply the topcoat – a lengthy and costly process. However, the good news is that there are now products available that can tackle the required prep in just one coat!
How to prep walls for painting
Opting for a combined primer and undercoat, such as our Tintable Primer & Undercoat, is ideal for when you need to apply a brightly coloured topcoat to a bare surface. Suitable for bare wood, walls and ceilings, it ensures good adhesion and can be tinted to achieve the perfect
finish and colour match, even with dramatic colour changes.

Decorating bare wood
Our Knot Block Wood Primer & Undercoat incorporates a knot blocker, helping to stop bleed through from wood knots and prevent cracking or peeling, in addition to sealing it. Ideal for internal applications, it’s great for timber such as knotty pine.

Painting metal
While these jobs have always had a tricky reputation, there are products that can be applied directly onto the substrate, without the need for primer at all. Take our Direct to Wood and Metal paint as an example. A water-based metal and wood paint, it can be directly applied to bare or
rusty metal, cast iron, galvanised steel, aluminium and stainless steel. It can also be used on exterior wood and timber, such as decking or balustrades, where you don’t need a knot blocker – or in combination with one where you do.

At Valspar Trade, we know that your time is valuable. That’s why we offer a range of multi-functional preparation products to help get the job done and ensure a perfect finish, every time.
